10 Best Rock Songs Of The 2020s (So Far)
1. White Elephant - Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
Apart from their collaborative efforts in the world of film scores, this was the first studio album from Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, without the Bad Seeds. And as to be expected it was atmospheric, dark, and f**king brilliant.
White Elephant was one of the stand out numbers. It had all the usual gothic features you might expect from these two: ominous synthesiser melodies, oppressively heavy bass lines, and of course, spoken word verses of poetic terror.
The duo embarked into the dark realms of dystopian, industrial rock with this one. As the song progresses, Cave's lyrics become more furious, more violent, more lacking in self control. Just as it's all about to boil over, the song breaks into a church choir-esque crescendo of soaring vocals, ringing bells and hopeful piano. To say this has a touch of the religious about it, would be an understatement.
The world needs Trent Reznor to team up with these guys, only he has the power to match the brooding intensity expressed on this track.
