9. Sincerity Is Scary – A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships (2018)
Critics loved A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships due to the interesting themes and the great mix of genres. ‘Sincerity Is Scary’ is one of many highlights on this terrific album, and though there are many great aspects to the song, the lyrics stand out more than anything else.
As the title suggests, the song is about irony and the challenges of trying to be authentic in the postmodern world. Healy also addresses how we often expel our insecurities onto those closest to us, and the damaging nature of social media amongst younger generations.
The vocal lines weave smoothly in and out of an upbeat, jazz-inspired instrumental. The piano is the most noticeable instrument in the mix, but the use of brass instruments is also a nice touch.
The video for ‘Sincerity Is Scary’ also adds to the quality of the song. It was clearly inspired by classical musicals and the colour scheme is gorgeous throughout.
