10 Best Songs By The 1975
8. People – Notes On A Conditional Form (2020)
‘People’ was the first single from The 1975's fourth album, and it’s fair to say it took everyone by surprise. Even the band’s earliest material (which was much more guitar-driven than their recent music), wasn’t as heavy as ‘People.’
From beginning to end, this two-and-a-half-minute number is essentially a punk anthem for the modern age. The guitars are front and centre, and though the instrumental is relatively simple, it certainly doesn’t lack impact. It’s punchy, aggressive, and carries a constant sense of momentum.
Healy’s vocal delivery matches the tone of the instrumental, but he also adds a hint of madness to the mix. This is particularly noticeable towards the end when he yells rather than sings during the final chorus.
It’s a shame the rest of the album was devoid of heavy, punk-inspired tunes because ‘People’ is a wicked track from start to finish.
