10 Best Twenty One Pilots Songs
3. Nico And The Niners – Trench (2018)
Twenty One Pilots kicked off the Trench era by releasing two songs on the same day – ‘Jumpsuit’ and ‘Nico and the Niners’. Though the former had plenty of punch, the latter was unlike anything the band had released before.
Of all the songs on Trench, ‘Nico and the Niners’ has the most distinctive atmosphere. It immerses the listener by dropping them in a world created by Joseph, which centres on a rebellious individual inside a city called Dema ruled by tyrannical bishops. This may seem like a strange concept, but it serves as a metaphor for battling one’s demons and insecurities.
Whilst the instrumental certainly isn’t simple, there’s a lowkey flavour to the electronics which really allows Dun’s drumming to come to the fore. And thanks to the sharp production, every single beat resonates with the listener.
In contrast to a lot of other Twenty One Pilots songs, ‘Nico and the Niners’ isn’t overly accessible and it was a bold move to release it as a single. With repeated listens, however, the remarkable depth of this track starts to surface.
