10 Best Twenty One Pilots Songs

4. Ode To Sleep – Vessel (2013)

Though no song can fully represent Twenty One Pilots, ‘Ode to Sleep’ is the one that comes closest. It merges a multitude of genres into a five-minute epic with plenty of great hooks.

This is another tune with an atypical structure, and whilst there’s a clear chorus, the rest of the track is a crazy mix of sounds. There’s fast-paced rapping, electronic grooves, emotive piano melodies, and some sensational drum work from Dun.

Once you’ve become accustomed to this bizarre tune, you can start to appreciate the lyrics a bit more. Joseph grapples with faith and the guilt he feels at having struggled against his demons. Yet the song certainly isn’t pessimistic. There’s a defiance as well as a vulnerability to the lyrical content.

Every Twenty One Pilots record kicks off with a bang, but ‘Ode to Sleep’ is still the strongest opener the band have ever put out.
