10 Best Wilco Songs
9. Misunderstood
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NRr2QrXn7sFrom one of Wilco’s most recent songs, let’s now turn to one of their oldest.
Misunderstood is the opening track on the band’s second record, the sprawling 19 track double album Being There (it also serves as the opener to their live album, Kicking Television, which is where anyone completely new to Wilco should start).
Thunderous drums and feedback kick things off before Jeff Tweedy’s acoustic guitar and Jay Bennett’s piano take things back several notches. Another slow-burner, it finally dials things up to 10 towards the end as the song starts to fall apart, and Tweedy sneers his thanks for “nothing at all” towards unnamed antagonists.
It borrows a verse from little-known singer-songwriter Peter Laughner but it’s the original line “Do you still love rock and roll?” that has become one of Wilco’s most enduring, and is still greeted with huge cheers whenever it’s played live.
