10 Biggest Band Blowups In Hard Rock

9. John Frusciante - Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers seemed to have the worst luck when holding on to members in the early days. Once the band felt that they had their sound down to a science, everything came screeching to a halt when guitarist Hillel Slovak died of a drug overdose after the band's third record. The loss of someone like Slovak should have killed the Peppers, but the band were catapulted into the rock big leagues once John Frusciante joined the band.

Though the era of Blood Sugar Sex Magik is looked at as a high point for the band commercially, Frusciante became more and more uncomfortable with the amount of celebrity the band generated. With one show after another, Frusciante began to get a bit testy with the rest of his bandmates, including a Saturday Night Live performance where he almost sabotaged "Under the Bridge" for singer Anthony Kiedis.

It was clear that Frusciante had had enough, but no one could have predicted how soon a split would happen. Just before the band were about to go onstage in Japan, Frusciante quit the band on the spot. After convincing him to complete the gig, Frusciante immersed himself in the drug scene until finally rejoining the Peppers in the late 90's for their album Californication. It may be water under the bridge now, but the Peppers definitely had some bad vibes once things blew up.
