10 Biggest Feuds In Rock Music History
2. Axl Rose Vs Kurt Cobain
Surprisingly, it was Kurt Cobain who started the back and forth between these two rock icons.
Axl and Guns N' Roses might have been the kings of heavy guitar led rock, but when Nirvana came along they shattered peoples perceptions of what rock music should represent.
In many ways, Nirvana and Guns N' Roses were the polar opposites, Guns embodied rock star idolism, clad all in leather, totting big hair and existing in a realm of excess, strippers and top hats. Nirvana on the other hand, were all about nonconformity, acceptance of the loner mentality and the rejection of trying to present a "cool" image to the public.
So when Axl requested Nirvana join Guns on tour, Kurt Cobain was less than enthusiastic, referencing his distaste of Guns in several interviews. Eventually the slights became too much for Axl, who embarked on one of his famous rants during a concert in 1992, calling Cobain "a f*cking junkie".
The most famous altercation occurred at the 1992 MTV Music Awards, when Courtney Love made a passing comment to Axl, prompting him to yell at Cobain to silence his partner. To which Cobain sarcastically turned to Love and said "Shut up B*tch". After Nirvana's performance that night, Dave Grohl would taunt Axl from the stage.
After Cobain's death the bands had something of a reconciliation, with Dave Grohl - in a gesture befitting his reputation as the nicest man in rock - lent Axl his famous throne after Axl injured his leg in 2016.
