10 Biggest Hard Rock & Metal Gigs Of All Time
5. Queen At Live Aid - 1985
For as amazing as a performance as this is, it almost pains me to put this so low. While Queen have dipped their toes into every genre under the sun, hard rock only seems to cover a small faction of what they actually do. However, if they belong anywhere near the heavier side of the spectrum, their performance at 1985's Live Aid concerts belongs here without question.
Initially hesitating to perform based on the politicism of the event, Queen relented and gave us the rock show to end all rock shows. In just 20 minutes, the band lays claim to the rock throne, with Freddie Mercury holding the audience in his hands. Though most of the set is comprised of the more radio-friendly fodder like "Radio Gaga" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," it doesn't get any better than hearing one audience rise like a single entity to stomp along to "We Will Rock You." It even gets better when Freddie Mercury does call and response with the audience before going into "Hammer to Fall."
By the time Mercury sends us off, it feels like the world is shining just a bit brighter. It might not be the heaviest performance on this list, but the way Queen devoured that audience is the reason why Dave Grohl cites them and the Pope with teaching him how to work an audience.
