For years after his death, Elvis Presley sightings became a mainstay on the covers of supermarket tabloids everywhere. In fact, there was even an Elvis Sighting Society formed in 1989 by a group of fans, to monitor these alleged incidents.

Arguably the most popular conspiracy theory associated with Presley involves the Mafia. In her 1988 book, entitled Is Elvis Alive, author Gail Brewer-Giorgio claims that Presley faked his own death in order to escape a group of organized criminals known as 'The Fraternity.'

According to Brewer-Giorgio, Presley was approached by a member of the group about purchasing a plane. When the FBI got wind of the incident, they decided to try and enlist the singer as an undercover agent in an effort to take the group down. Ever the patriot, Presley agreed and began working undercover.

Unfortunately, the group discovered Presely was a mole, and in order to avoid retaliation, he was forced to go into the witness protection program. Presley would fake his own death as an additional layer of protection. The author obtained this info by allegedly examing thousands of FBI documents.

If nothing else, the story would make one hell of a movie.
