10 Bizarre Songs Which Prove That The 1950s Were Crazier Than You Think
9. Bob Vidone And The Rhythm Rockers – Weird
Primal screams, rumbling brass and a low, slow drumbeat that would make a caveman proud. With it's opening, eerie, effect-laden shout and the sweltering density of the production, this is a soundtrack for the deep, sweating nightmarish jungle of fever dreams, where long-forgotten beasts slither through the undergrowth and death is only a footfall away.
The Rhythm Rockers never seem to have made much of a splash beyond their native New England, but we will always remember them for this delicious slice of '50s madness – a perfect example of the directions in which artists were daring to take music in the latter part of that decade.
Robert Vidone passed away in 2007. According to legend, he was said to have been one of the greatest frontmen ever to grace a stage. Following this recording, the band changed their name to Robby and the Troubadours and later scored a minor hit with the much more restrained ‘The Lemon Twist’.
