10 Cheesiest Songs Of The 80s

6. Safety Dance - Men Without Hats (1983)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7hHx7gdN68 We can dance if we want to We can leave your friends behind Cause your friends don't dance And if they don't dance Well they're no friends of mine Another infuriatingly catchy tune from 80s cheesedom, this one hit wonder - Safety Dance by the highly regarded Men Without Hats, will furrow its way into your brain and set up camp there. It made the top ten of singles charts worldwide. You may think of the title and ponder what the heck is a Safety Dance, but this apparently gibberish song has a meaning. The song was written after the author got kicked out of a nightclub for pogoing to a New Wave song. This pogoing became the dance craze after disco died out but it was a lot more vigorous than disco dancing. So the song is a rally against Bouncers throwing people out of clubs for pogoing. The song is essentially a protest ditty calling for freedom of expression. It also has a really insane music video which is medieval themed, replete with Morris Dancers! The song is half genius, half rotten, mouldy cheese.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
