5. Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep - Middle Of The Road (1971)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSNSTerj2Kc Last night I heard my mama singing a song Oh we chirpy chirpy tweet tweet Woke up this morning and my mama was gone Oh we chirpy chirpy tweet tweet Whenever you hear this utterly ghastly song, you want to lift a giant sledgehammer and bash both the stereo/TV/radio - whatever medium it is playing on - and bash your own head in too. It is truly that bad. I mean really really bad. And it is made worse by the fact that it is infectious and will crawl into your brain and lurk there for several days... if not years, you lucky, lucky listener. It (I can't name it) charted as number one or two in all the European countries because a flock of cheese mongering, tone deaf people had an outbreak of extreme bad taste. Apparently we have Tony Blackburn to thank for this record coming to our shores - yes, he championed it. It has been translated into Spanish, Khmer, Korean, German and Vietnamese - so its tentacles have reached worldwide shores. Probably because of the facile nature of the lyrics - as you can see from above, they lend well to translation. It is at heart a nasty song, taunting little defenceless chicks about their parents leaving them. Watch the above video at your own peril...

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
