4. Having My Baby - Paul Anka (1974)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFHWl-ZyRAg The need inside you I see it showin' Whoa, the seed inside ya, baby, do you feel it growin'? Are you happy you know it? Absolute nonsense that managed to top the charts, Having My Baby is rightfully singled out as a terrible song many times and made fun of. Covered by Glee - thus cementing its kitsch status, and the ire of many feminists, Anka was accused of chauvinism in the song, which he maintained was a love song. Why did he say "You're having my baby" instead of "You're having our baby". This paternalistic claim on the foetus angered many but Anka claimed "having my baby" sounded better than "having our baby". Mr Anka, nothing in your song sounds better than anything. It is pure rubbish. Just read the following lines: Didn't have to keep it Wouldn't put you through it You could have swept it from your life But you wouldn't do it, you wouldn't do it This vulgar allusion to abortion doesn't sit at all well in the song. Anka is trying to be nice about a desperately sensitive topic and comes away sounding very trite and ignorant. Of course a woman has the right to choose, but we don't need to have it rammed in our faces in such a maudlin way. Mr Anka! Get thee with your cheesy song to Room 101!
