10 Christmas No 1's That Had Nothing To Do With Christmas

6. Bob the Builder - Can We Fix It?

http://youtu.be/CZnYzD-LnSU Year: 2000 Weeks at No.1: Three I'll go ahead and say it, this is even worse than Mr. Blobby. It managed to knock Eminem's Stan off number one and even prevented Westlife from scoring their 8th consecutive #1, which would've matched The Beatles' record (one comfort to take from the song's achievements I suppose). If you've been living under a large boulder and never heard of the programme, Bob the Builder is a stop motion animation (later becoming CGI) children's TV show that began in 1999 about, funnily enough, a builder called Bob. He's voiced by Neil Morrissey, creator and star of the comedy Men Behaving Badly, which is about as far removed from Bob the Builder as you can get. Can We Fix It? was the theme song for the programme and main catchphrase of Bob. Production company Hit Entertainment decided to turn this 45-second intro into a full song, initially just as an extended version for children presumably, until somebody came up with the bright idea of making a pop record out of it. Hoping it would be released for Christmas 1999 while the show was fresh (can you imagine bringing in the new Millennium with this as your #1?), the project got delayed due to Morrissey's commitments and they waited until the year after; while constantly adding new bits to the backing track in the meantime and attempting to give it as broad an appeal as possible. Over one million copies of this song were sold, making it the highest seller of 2000 and the 80th best-selling single of all time. And amazingly, Bob the Builder wasn't even a one-hit wonder. He had a second #1 hit with a cover of a cover: Mambo No.5.
