10 Christmas Songs That Are Actually Good
2. Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmastime
There've been easier decisions than choosing between this and Pipes of Peace. Written during the former Beatle's experimental synth-y phase in 1979, McCartney wrote and recorded the song all on his lonesome at his farm in Sussex and became the third Beatle to release Christmas material following Lennon's Happy Xmas (War Is Over) and Harrison's Ding Dong, Ding Dong.
Written during the sessions of the highly experiment McCartney II solo album, and just prior to the dissolution of Wings, the track reached No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart before making brief appearances in the Billboard charts in 1984 and 1996.
A testament to McCartney's ability to write songs, Wonderful Christmastime still receives significant annual airplay, not bad since some music critics regard it as one of his lesser offerings (the synthesizer 'boink' noise sounds like a five year-old playing a keyboard for the first time). It's also been covered by a host of artists, including Kylie Minogue and Mika who covered the song for Christmas 2016 (spoiler: it's not very good at all).
