10 Christmas Songs That Are Actually Good
1. Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name
This is officially a Christmas song now and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. It beat Joe McElderry, X-Factor, and most importantly, Simon Cowell to the UK Christmas No. 1 in 2009. If that isn't just the best then I give up.
Written and released in 1992 for absolutely no Christmas-related reasons whatsoever, RATM's debut single sent shockwaves across the music industry. Noted for its distinct guitar riff and nonchalant use of profanity, the song spewed forth messages of anti-racism and anti-police brutality.
However it was in December 2009 when this song pertained to the annual bauble bonanza. London-based couple Jon and Tracy Morter launched a Facebook group encouraging people to buy the song in the run up to Christmas to prevent the X-Factor winner from taking the top spot, which the show had been dominating in previous years. Along with the campaign benefiting homeless charities, Simon Cowell branded the campaign "stupid", so annoying him was an extra incentive.
The campaign gained support from the likes of Dave Grohl, Muse, Paul McCartney, The Prodigy, Tom Morello, and even Jedward! In the end, the campaign was triumphant and took the Christmas No. 1 spot. Joe McElderry faded off into the void and Simon Cowell sobbed himself further into his waistline. According to Guinness World Records, the campaign also made the track the fastest-selling digital track in the UK.
