In 1984 the uplifting Christmas hit was still very much a big deal. The Artist Then Still Known as Prince, however, had other ideas. In the midst of his Purple Rain pomp he released Another Lonely Christmas as the B-side to I Would Die 4 U. While other lonely-at-Christmas records have their singers lamenting break-ups or unrequited love, the Little Purple One is lonely thanks to the sudden death of his lover on Christmas Day itself. Of course, this being a Prince song, his main memories of his pneumonia-riddled love are of their naked time together. Meanwhile, one particularly weird verse has him perving over his late love's sister before remembering he's in a mournful mood. Nevertheless the abiding feeling of Another Lonesome Christmas is of spending seven consecutive Christmases so drunk you forget all about tragedies of Christmases past. It's never shots of spirits for the flamboyant star, though, who drowns his sorrows instead in banana daiquiris.
