10 Classic Guitar Riffs That Were Created By Accident
6. Everlong - Foo Fighters
When looking at the slew of post grunge bands who came out past 1994, Foo Fighters were one of the few that stood out as genuinely fantastic. Though that could easily be attributed to the fact that Dave Grohl of Nirvana was the one leading the charge, the power behind stuff like Monkey Wrench and My Hero have held up way better than any Creed song could hope to. While Everlong might be the standout track from their breakthrough album the Colour and the Shape, the idea to even include it at all was nearly an afterthought.
During one of the rehearsals for the final runthrough of the album, Grohl was fiddling around during the back half of Monkey Wrench when he hit upon the defining chord of the track, which he likened to the mellow version of a band like Sonic Youth. Building parts on from there, Everlong started to take on a much greater character, as Grohl poured his heart out about the recent split he had with his long time girlfriend.
Once bits and pieces started to get layered onto it, the whole thing turned into the song that would not die, eventually going nuclear when an acoustic version from the Howard Stern show started to pick up steam on its own. No matter which version you end up listening to though, the genesis of the whole thing is still just a Grohl at half capacity.
