10 Classic Music Albums That Will Make You Love Nu Metal

7. White Pony - Deftones

One of the major stumbling blocks that comes with nu metal is just how untuneful it can sound to some people. Although it might be a good outlet for teens to let out their angst, there's only so many times you can listen to the dropped tunings of someone like Korn and not find a real hook. As Deftones made their way into the next decade though, they had something else in mind for what the genre could be.

Having already brought in turntables to provide different soundscapes, White Pony is the most logical next step in that journey, painting a picture of people falling apart due to drugs. Although not every song is about narcotics or anything, you can definitely feel a bit of a haze every time you listen to the album, whether it's the pure desire of Rx Queen or the primal scream that Chino Moreno goes for on Change (in the House of Flies).

As you dig further into the album, there are also more than a few switch ups, like when the turntables serve as practically the lead instrument on Digital Bath and bringing in Tool's Maynard James Keenan to add a guest vocal onto the song Passenger, kicking the entire song into the stratosphere. Whereas most other bands were trying to use their songs to vent their frustrations, Deftones feel like they're trying to actively purge themselves of their vices on every track.
