10 Classic Rock Acoustic Songs
9. Planet Caravan - Black Sabbath
When it comes to the greatest acoustic jams in rock history, Black Sabbath doesn't really sound like they belong in the same conversation. Ever since the early '70s, the calling card of these misfits from Birmingham was always about scaring you to death with the mammoth riffs of Tony Iommi and Ozzy Osbourne's banshee like howl. On Paranoid though, we did get thrown a bit of a curveball on Planet Caravan.
Compared to the more straight ahead rockers on the record like War Pigs and Iron Man, this was originally conceived as just a quiet little jam that Iommi would play in between takes on his acoustic guitar. Once Bill Ward traded in his booming drums for some congas though, it began to take shape as this haunting piece of mellow rock, with Ozzy telling the tale or drifting off into space with your loved one.
For all of the basic metal that comes from Sabbath, this is also one of their more adventurous tracks, with Iommi going for a solo that owes a lot more to jazz greats like Joe Pass than the typical bluesy players of the day. Although this is far from what you come to Sabbath for, the spirit of Planet Caravan is mellow, sullen, and still as haunting as ever.
