10 Classic Rock Acoustic Songs

8. Daughter - Pearl Jam

Grunge doesn't seem to get nearly enough credit for its versatility in the early '90s. For as much as people want to chalk up the era of flannel to a bunch of guys singing about how sad they were, you weren't going to see Mudhoney make the same music as Alice in Chains any time soon. Though the main calling card of the genre was about Seattle-ites playing loud, Pearl Jam gave us an emotional powerhouse with just a few simple chords on Daughter.

This wasn't the first time that PJ had ever broken out the acoustics though, with tracks like Garden and Black from Ten showing their prowess behind the unplugged fretboard. When looking at Daughter on its own though, this is probably the most heartaching track they had ever made, as Eddie Vedder tells the story of a young girl being so hyperactive that her parents think she's crazy.

Instead of the usual redemption arc you would get from songs like these, Vedder leaves everything how it is, as we watch this young restless girl slowly turn into a stoic adult with each passing day, never seeming to live up to the ideals that her parents set for her. While grunge may still get labelled as the depressing genre about guys that complain too much, you won't find many other songs that are as sympathetic as this.
