10 Classic Rock Acoustic Songs
7. Space Oddity - David Bowie
If you had heard the first David Bowie record, you would think that we'd be looking at him as a casualty of '60s schmaltz right now. Compared to the glam rock god that we know him as today, Bowie's first record was a vaudevillian attempt at folk rock, with songs that were far too odd to even take seriously. No...if Bowie wanted to be taken seriously, he had to reach for heights greater than this Earth.
Released concurrently with the Space Race of the late '60s, Space Oddity quickly gained traction as Bowie's first great song, recounting the journey of Major Tom as he makes his way through the galaxy only to lose contact by the end. Even though most acoustic songs are known to tone things down a bit, the free flowing chords that Bowie uses on this track are perfect for setting the scene, almost like you're in the cockpit with Major Tom as the rocket is about to take off.
You can also hear bits and pieces of Bowie's glam period starting to creep into play on this track, with the midpoint vamp and clap-along rhythm sounding like an unplugged version of what Mick Ronson would be doing just a few years later. Little did we know that this first mission was only the beginning of Bowie's art rock adventure.
