10 Classic Rock Albums That Got Better Over Time
4. October - U2
There are more than a few rock fans who would much rather take a taser to Bono's nostrils than to listen to another minute of U2's music. Along with some feeling that they were overexposed, it's easy to see Bono's holier than thou outlook on rock and roll to be a little too pompous for its own good. If you think it's bad now, you can only imagine what happened when they took on religion on only their second time up to bat.
To this day, even the band seems to admit that making October so quickly after their first album may have been a rough bargain, being a lot more serious than some fans may have been willing to take. Although some people think that the album falls on the wrong side of preachy sometimes, the actual tunes at the heart of these tracks are still miles above what most others were capable of, like when Bono goes for long high notes on I Fall Down.
While songs like Gloria may be a lot to take in all at once, this is the definition of an album that was meant to grow on you, since you're only able to peel back the layers after spending some time with the record. More than anything, this feels more like the turning point for the U2 that we know today. It might have been called the sophomore slump at the time, but if the band hadn't gotten this little stumbling block, we probably wouldn't have gotten records like the Joshua Tree later.
