10 Classic Rock Artists That Died Too Soon

3. Freddie Mercury - Queen

Across their long career, Queen had been one of the most interesting rock bands in the world. With every member bringing a sophistication to the music, each left turn the band made into rock, disco, and funk seemed to turn out incredibly well. Though the band were best as a collective, no one could deny the power of Freddie Mercury.

Far from just a great singer, Mercury was one of the greatest vocalists to ever touch a microphone and one of the greatest frontmen to ever grace a rock stage. However, the man's destiny would catch up with him long before we were ready for it to end. A few years after the band's momentous performance at Live Aid, Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS and told his time was short.

Undeterred, Mercury continued to create groundbreaking music and even released two albums after his diagnosis, but his frail state marked the beginning of the end. After making an announcement of his diagnosis in the winter of 1991, Mercury passed away the very next day from complications when battling pneumonia.

Though the band was able to cobble together one last tribute to Mercury with Made in Heaven, the music world had just lost one of its true giants.
