10 Classic Rock Bands That Went Disco
2. KISS
Okay, but surely this is the moment that rock and roll jumped the shark right? KISS were always known as the pure monsters of rock who cowered to no one, so how do you merge that with the sounds of Donna Summer? In a sane world, you don't, but Paul Stanley's knack for songwriting gave us something new when we got to the album Dynasty.
They didn't hide their disco influence either, putting their pop flavored smash I Was Made For Lovin You right at the top of the track listing, as most of the KISS Army gasped in horror from the sidelines. As much as this seemed like the death of the band, it turned out to be a bit of a fake out, as the rest of the album was your traditional KISS songs with some dance elements thrown in, with a ballad like Sure Know Something offset by Hard Times or X-Ray Eyes.
As the years have gone on, KISS have never backed down from their disco smash either, still keeping I Was Made For Lovin You a staple of their set list. This is one of the few times where a song has actually gotten a little better with age, with the latest live versions pumping it up a little more and putting in a distorted guitar where the keyboards used to be. KISS may have strayed a bit from rock, but that doesn't mean that you can't eventually find your way back home.
