10 Classic Rock Songs That Should've Been Singles
7. No Surrender - Bruce Springsteen
No one could have predicted the star power Bruce Springsteen gained from Born to Run. The album was a watershed moment for rock music that was almost a hail mary play for Springsteen to prevent him from going broke on the New Jersey Club circuit. Nothing could really top a record like that, but Born in the USA did give it a run for its money.
For many fans, this is what launched the Boss into the '80s, with songs like the title track and "Dancing in the Dark" becoming staples on MTV, but there was another classic that slipped just under the radar. As opposed to the heavier topics covered on the rest of the record, "No Surrender" is a light of optimism, as Springsteen sings his heart out about a couple determined to do anything to escape from their miserable lives. For any Springsteen aficionado, one can catch whiffs of classics like "Thunder Road" in his delivery.
Given the great singalong chorus and simplistic arrangement, it's a wonder why this wasn't released as a single instead of the very political title track. There's practically a gold mine of great songs laced throughout Springsteen's back catalog, and over time, "No Surrender" deserves a spot amongst that hallowed company.
