10 Classic Rock Songs That Should've Been Singles

8. Roy Rogers - Elton John

Elton John is responsible for scoring some of the greatest years of our lives. Even if you couldn't recognize the man by name, songs like "Tiny Dancer," "Candle in the Wind," and pretty much anything on the Lion King soundtrack has burrowed into our hearts in a way very few artists can. There are plenty of classic tunes written around characters, but the real pathos comes when John starts pulling from his own experiences.

Written by Bernie Taupin, "Roy Rogers" is an ode to the Westerns that both he and Elton used to watch in their youth. As opposed to sounding like a corny nostalgia trip, the melody of the tune is absolutely beautiful, capturing the fleeting nature that comes with being a wide-eyed kid. Elton sells it too, as his vocal inflections give you a peek into the innocent kid that dressed up as a cowboy before donning the familiar sunglasses and outrageous stage attire.

Elton has sang plenty of love songs throughout the course of his career, but this wistful ballad takes you back to a simpler time way before any of the reality of life crept in. Change may be around the corner, but when you put on "Roy Rogers," you're right back there on the prairie without a care in the world.
