10 Classic Rock Songs That Should've Been Singles
5. Getting in Tune - The Who
It's still baffling that an album as classic as Who's Next can seem like a failure. While not a full-blown faceplant, Pete Townshend still considers the collection of the band's most classic songs as not nearly the album it should have been. Though the initial plans for the second rock opera Lifehouse didn't see the light of day, "Getting in Tune" is where we can see that epic potential shining through.
Centered in a dystopian future, Lifehouse was originally intended to be about a man who finds solace through music in a world that has outlawed any creative expression. With its piano-driven skeleton, "Getting In Tune" shows our hero finding the singular note that fits his personality, but things take a much grander turn once we hit the end of the verse. Giving way to lush power chords, the entire bridge section seems to capture the narrator's mind being expanded through the power of the music around him.
As opposed to the more straightforward experiences like "Baba O'Riley" or "Won't Get Fooled Again," this tune was probably too in line with the story to be released as a single, but deserves the recognition regardless. Townshend always wanted to have a musical epiphany go off in the listener's head, and "Getting in Tune" is the one song that feels most like that mission statement.
