10 Classic Rock Songs That Should've Been Singles

4. Wasted Time - Eagles

The Eagles really could do no wrong by the time they got to Hotel California. After years of having chart topping hits and flirting with different styles, the band had hit upon a groove once they got Joe Walsh and Don Felder in their ranks as guitarists. Upon release, Hotel California was gaining traction as the band's crowned jewel, but the beauty came in right after the singles.

Though almost every track on the first side of the record is a classic, "Wasted Time" doesn't get nearly enough attention for its heightened emotional resonance. Centered around a beautiful piano melody, Don Henley soars above the track, as he talks about a relationship gone sour. Throughout the track, things build and build as our narrator goes from frustration to understanding, almost as if he's sure he'll find closure as the strings fade out.

Walsh and Felder might not have a ton to do on this track, but the true professionals are those who can do a whole lot with just the barebones of a song. The band had so much faith in the song that they even featured a reprise of it to start off the next side of the album, like giving you a little taste of the fleeting beauty that once was. There are a lot of bells and whistles on this track, but if it still holds up as beautiful when you pull everything back, you know you have a fantastic song on your hands.
