10 Classic Rock Songs That Should've Been Singles
3. Songbird - Fleetwood Mac
Most Fleetwood Mac fans have usually gotten accommodated with their music through Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Though every member ended up playing an equal role in the band's glory years, no one could resist the ongoing chemistry and volatility of the band's romantically-involved songwriters. Then again, who needs another romantic diss track when you have songs like this at your disposal?
Coming from the oft-forgotten songwriter Christine McVie, "Songbird" is a gorgeous piece of musical poetry that feels like it was ripped straight out of your heart. At the same time that Buckingham and Nicks were splitting up during the Rumors sessions, McVie was separating from bassist John McVie. Knowing the emotional potency behind the song, "Songbird" reads like a sad lament at a crumbled relationship, as Christine sings of her devotion knowing that it won't be reciprocated.
Even though Christine and John remained separated throughout the Rumors tour, the bassist said that he would often tear up whenever Christine performed the song onstage, knowing the actual pain he had caused her. Fleetwood Mac may be known as a pop band by rock devotees, but the amazing wordplay and melodic framework of this track can go toe-to-toe with anything Joni Mitchell has ever mustered.
