10 Classic Rock Songs That Were Written About Drugs

1. Got To Get You Into My Life - The Beatles

As the British Invasion got underway, the Beatles' biggest strong suit came with love songs. Even when they progressed past the traditional moptop look and songs about puppy love, the next phase of their career had them dissecting the concept of love as well, filtered through everything from perfect pop songs to avant garde experimental pieces. For Revolver though, the flavor shifted to R&B for Paul McCartney and Got To Get You Into My Life became one of his trademark love songs...about pot.

Right around the time that they were turning to harder drugs, this soul pastiche from McCartney was actually as an ode to his drug of choice, with the lyrics talking about taking a ride and how pot keeps him going throughout the day. There's also a bit of humor to the whole thing as well though, with the horn section almost accentuating the kind of buzz that you get from that first hit, along with the main guitar fill afterwards showing you finally reaching the drug high.

This was just the tipping point for the Fab Four though, with drugs informing the rest of the album on songs like Tomorrow Never Knows before leaning fully into their psychedelic period on Sgt. Peppers just a year later. The '60s Revolution was underway, and this was one of the first signs that the rock scene was about to go into some trippy places.
