10 Classic Rock Songs You Didn't Realize Were Incredibly Dark

4. Don't Stand So Close to Me - The Police

Almost 70% of the songs written by the Police aren't necessarily geared towards children most of the time. Their first hit Roxanne is all about how Sting came across a hooker in the red light district, and their biggest song Every Breath You Take is the best wedding song ever written about someone who is looking to stalk your every move. Even with all of that in their backlog, Don't Stand So Close To Me may be the most uncomfortable Police song to sing at karaoke.

From a musical perspective though, this might be one of the more carefree songs in the band's catalog, having a bit of a calypso flavor in some of the percussion and taking a few jazzy turns every now and again. When you look at the lyrics though, this is definitely not child friendly, even if there are children involved. Going through every verse, Sting sings about this young teacher being crushed on by his students, who may or may not be underage in this scenario.

It gets even weirder when you realize that Sting was actually a teacher before making it big with the Police, so this may have been an actual thing that happened to him in his early years. The music is good enough so you can ignore some of the more questionable bits, but just try to listen to a line like "wet bus stop, she's waiting, his car is warm and dry" and try not to be grossed out at least a little bit.
