10 Classic Rock Songs You Didn't Realize Were Incredibly Dark

3. Disarm - Smashing Pumpkins

Once the hair metal movement started to fade from memory, the start of the alternative revolution in the '90s was about something much closer to the bone. Even with the self identified Slacker Generation, the songs coming out of Seattle were a lot more layered than you would have thought on first listen, like Alice in Chains going on about drug addiction and Nirvana touching on sexual abuse on Polly. Just a few states East though, Billy Corgan was dealing with some major struggles with depression.

You wouldn't know it for listening to Siamese Dream though, which is a record that feels like it's trying to be the '90s answer to some of the grand rock albums that we got back in the '70s. When we reach the half way point and the acoustics come out though, Billy gets almost a little too personal on Disarm, as he reminisces on his childhood in the chorus before going on about his suicidal urges, arguing that the environment that he's put in by his friends and family is what is driving him to kill himself.

This isn't even the first time that this has happened on the album either, with the song Today being one of their biggest singles with a lyric sheet that's celebrating today because he might not be around to see tomorrow if his depression gets the better of him. As much as Gen X might have sounded whiny some of the time, there was still some genuine pain hiding underneath.
