10 Classic Songs That Aren't As Serious As You Think
2. Dyers Eve - Metallica
Any thrash metal aficionado tends to look back on the '80s era of Metallica with a lot of fondness. Despite the loss of Cliff Burton and the virtual lack of bass throughout And Justice for All, the final installment of the group's '80s output was a firm stamp of intensity to leave things off on, with Dyers Eve taking all the intensity and jamming it into just 5 glorious minutes. So what do you put on top of this hellish ride? Teen angst.
When put up against the classics in Metallica's catalog, the fact that this song is just about James Hetfield complaining about his home life seems quaint after talk of war and the justice system on songs like the title track and One. Hell, if this were in the wrong context, there's a good chance that these kind of lyrics would have made great entries in the more edgy side of the pop punk bands that would coming down the pipeline in the early '00s.
Kudos to Hetfield for being ahead of the curve, but it does make for a bit of an audible clunk when you actually sit down with the record again. Because whenever you think of Metallica's epic writing scope, just remember they occasionally have the same tortured souls that the likes of Blink 182 complain about from time to time.
