10 Classic Songs That Have Aged Terribly
4. Kid A - Radiohead
The idea of Radiohead making a bait and switch change in styles after coming off of Ok Computer probably felt like career suicide at the dawn of the '00s. After making one of the biggest landmark albums in rock history, their line in the sand division on Kid A gave way to songs that were cold, calculated, and dripping with dread from start to finish. Though the end result was bold and brash as Squidward Tentacles would say, the title track of the album doesn't have nearly the same amount of staying power.
Working with loops and electronic effects for the first time, most of this song's "lyrics" were piecemeal assembled from bits of dialogue that Thom Yorke had recorded in the studio and then fed through a device that would make it sound like he was singing on replay. While the effect itself was pretty cool for the time, it's not necessarily all that fun to listen to these days.
Compared to some of the other strange sounds that populate songs like Idioteque and Motion Picture Soundtrack, this feels reminiscent of the kind of noises you hear when you try to order on that crappy speaker at the McDonald's drive thru. Kudos for the innovation you guys, now can you please get on with some actual songs, please?
