10 Classic Songs That Have Aged Terribly
3. Across the Sea - Weezer
Not many artists were willing to lay their heart on their sleeves in the '90s quite like Rivers Cuomo. After coming off one of the greatest debuts of the decade with Weezer's Blue Album, their followup Pinkerton was a lot more of an emotional listen, as Cuomo grappled with his nervousness, his unlucky romantic affairs, and trying to hold onto his sanity in a world that thrives on insanity. While everyone knows what it's like to fall in and out of love, Across the Sea is the kind of love that you don't really need to put down in song.
Granted, the genesis of this track starts off fairly strong, with Cuomo detailing a letter that he got from a teenage fan in Japan. There's probably millions of fans who would love to have been immortalized in their favorite bands' song, until you actually get into the gory details.
As the second verse comes up, Cuomo takes it down a much creepier direction, as he starts fixating on this girl every day and wondering what her room looks like and if she touches herself while thinking about him. Yeah, we just took a hard left turn into creeper territory real quick. Cuomo may in fact have a knack for turning his emotions into gold, but this kind of scuzzy song is two bad lyrics away from getting a restraining order.
