10 Classic Songs That Secretly Inspired Oasis
1. I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing - The New Seekers
Throughout most of this list, it's pretty clear why Noel Gallagher pulled from the kind of songs that he did. These songs were what turned him into the songwriter that he is and (on more than a few occasions) already worked as hits from some people before he was even a songwriter. Of all the places to take inspiration from though, going into the realm of commercial jingles is certainly a weird way to go about it.
Before the melody even starts on Shakermaker though, you know that this wasn't going to be the most original of songs, with half of it being centered around the same 12 bar blues shuffle that we all learn when we first pick up a guitar. When Liam starts to open his mouth though, the melody is a take on I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, which was part of a Coca Cola advert around the time that the band was writing the song.
Since this was one of the first lifts that Oasis was known for though, they seemed to lean into it, with Liam actually singing some of the lyrics to the original jingle live when the band played Glastonbury. Even when Oasis tribute acts started to pop up, you had the band No Way Sis releasing their own version of I'd Like To Teach the World to Sing in the same style of Shakermaker. Out of every other song on this list, it's nice to know that even the Oasis fanbase is in on the joke of this song.
