10 Classic Songs That Secretly Inspired Oasis

9. Uptight - Stevie Wonder

Most of Noel Gallagher's influences in the early days are pretty easy to spot. Just from the look of Oasis during the Definitely Maybe, you can tell that people like the Jam and the Smiths were definitely up high on his list of greatest British acts of all time. He did have some more eclectic tastes though, and one of his biggest lifts actually came from Motown.

Just saying it out loud though, Stevie Wonder and Oasis seem like the furthest thing from each other, especially when you consider the kind of funk leaning songs that Wonder would be making around his glory period. If you look on the flipside of the Don't Look Back in Anger single, you have Step Out, with the chorus being lifted from Stevie's single Uptight from back in his pre Music of My Mind era.

There are even some added extensions on this song that go far beyond just Stevie Wonder, with some claiming that the bridge section with the guitar lick is also lifted from the Thin Lizzy classic Rosalie. In a court of law though, the judge ultimately decided that Noel did lift a little too much, with Stevie's estate getting compensated for it. If you look at any of the writing credits for this song since then, you'll see Noel's name right next to one of the most talented R&B singers who has ever lived.
