10 Classic Songs That Weren't Supposed To Be Hits

1. Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day

Most music fans just accept that there are certain types of songs that aren't supposed to be hits. From the posse cuts in hip hop to the instrumentals in prog rock, most of these tracks are so different from the mass appeal that you can't even imagine them gracing the charts at any point in time. And yet if you could kick all amounts of ass at every part of the writing process, you get something like Jesus of Suburbia.

Compared to the other rock on the charts around 2005, most of the aspects of this song shouldn't work. I mean, when's the last time you heard a full 9 minute song with 5 different movements actually find its way onto the hit parade?

Once the actual allure of Green Day's American Idiot started to pick up steam though, some radio stations started to take a closer look at the more lengthy cut from the record. Working in the short-attention-span format, this song is practically 5 songs in one, which is enough to keep the audience guessing throughout its duration.

Even though some radio stations tended to play an abridged version of it and taking out some sections, it wasn't out of the question for people to just hear this in full blasting over the radio.

For as much as some rock stations are about serving the bottom line, every now and again a song that comes along which breaks every rule and still comes out on top.
