10 Classic Songs With Killer Guest Stars
4. You Oughta Know - Alanis Morrissette
"You Oughta Know" is one of the weirdest songs that Alanis Morrissette has ever put out. For as many classic downtempo cuts can be found on her album Jagged Little Pill, this verbal assault on one of her exes is what made her an alternative rock queen almost overnight. Most of the performance comes down to Alanis' vocal, but the band behind her is practically a who's who of alt rock talent.
Long before he got acquainted with the Foo Fighters, Taylor Hawkins was Morrissette's drummer, whose intense tom fills can be heard throughout this song. At the same time, the more percussive aspects of this song owe a lot more to funk than you might expect.
As opposed to bringing in a typical alt rock band to back her, the guitar and bass are played by Dave Navarro and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which gives more attitude to Morrissette's jaded lyrics.
Though each member brings their A-game to Alanis' song, the brightest guest star has got to be Flea, whose bass lines provide a perfect counterpoint to the vocals and really guide the band throughout the song. Alanis Morrissette may have already been on her way to the big time, but musician cameos like this showed that she had pretty excellent taste in alt rock.
