10 Concept Albums That Make Absolutely No Sense
8. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge - My Chemical Romance
Most bands don't have to necessarily be bad storytellers in order to make a disjointed concept album. While the initial building blocks might be there for something great, it just comes down to whether the pieces of the story actually fit or not. Yes, even some of the greatest acts in the world can fall victim to the flimsy story.
Then again, it almost hurts putting My Chemical Romance in this spot considering that they wrote one of the greatest rock operas of all time with The Black Parade. Starting just one album prior though, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is another concept, only with the loosest of threads in between everything. In the words of Gerard Way, this album was meant to be about a couple who die only to have the man resurrected to retrieve the souls of 100 evil men before joining his lover in the afterlife.
On paper, that kind of thing would be amazing for an emo rock album, and yet the actual storyline of these tracks may as well be out of order. Considering the actual story starts at the album closer I Never Told You What I Do For a Living, a lot of fans have speculated that you have to play the track listing backwards to get the full story, only to have it not make sense again with random singles like The Ghost Of You being in the middle of the record. For as much as they dropped the ball on this outing, MCR's storytelling chops were just preparing us for the amazing material that was to come.
