10 Cover Songs That Make Absolutely No Sense
7. SexyBack - Poison
It was kind of sad seeing hair metal die the way it did at the turn of the '90s. While a lot of bands just faded away in the wake of the alternative explosion, the idea of seeing these party animals trying to get moody and introspective just made them feel hollow by comparison. Or in Poison's case, just waiting a few generations to hop on another completely different style.
Ever since the mid '00s, the thought of having any new Poison album feels slim to none, with Hollyweird being the last real artistic contribution that these kings of the Sunset Strip ever made. On their covers album Poison'd though, we were given one hell of a curveball with SexyBack, with Bret Michaels doing his best to hop on the modern pop classic by Justin Timberlake.
On almost all fronts, a song like this just feels wrong, as the guitars seem to clash with the initial groove that JT's original had so well. Also, for as captivating of a frontman as he may have been in his prime, Bret Michaels is no Justin Timberlake, instead looking like an old man trying to hop on some new karaoke to show that he can still throw down with the cool kids. Compared to the usual fun loving sound Poison is known for, this track just feels like something that should have been included on a bonus DVD of Rock of Love and never heard from again.
