10 Cover Songs That Make Absolutely No Sense
8. They're Red Hot - Red Hot Chili Peppers
For a band that gets labelled as a one trick pony, there's a lot of musical fusions going on in the world of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Every since first hitting the scene in the late '80s, the sounds of something like Suck My Kiss and Californication seem like night and day, going from funk to punk to mellow classic rock without even breaking in a sweat. If there was one genre to keep in the past though, it should have been the blues.
Looking to have some fun in the studio during the making of the album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the little snippet of the song They're Red Hot is just a riff on the old blues tune played by Robert Johnson. Instead of the tongue in cheek humor of the original though, the Chilis' take on this one is blues if it were on cocaine, with every instrument being played almost as fast as it can possibly go.
If you're not careful, you can even find yourself out of sync with the rest of the group, as Anthony Kiedis tries to desperately sing along with the hectic instrumental underneath of him. While something like this serves as a bit of funny downtime in between takes, you shouldn't really be expecting this to go down as an all time classic or anything.
