10 Cover Songs That Make Absolutely No Sense
4. You Shook Me All Night Long - Celine Dion
On the whole, cover songs aren't something to be taken all that seriously. I mean, unless you know that you have something golden on your hands, a lot of these songs are excuses for a band to cut loose and have some fun in the studio or live on stage. If you don't know what you're doing though, it can go south real fast.
From the outset, no one was really expecting anything based in rock and roll to come out of Celine Dion, considering her many successes in the pop and adult contemporary world. Once she showed up at a residency in Vegas, her cover of AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long is one of the most unintentionally hilarious things that an artist has ever done live onstage. Thinking she'll cross genre boundaries, Dion really doesn't have the vocal chops to get raw and gritty like Brian Johnson, no matter how much her band is trying to help her out.
Even with the help of Anastacia, the result of this song feels like watching your in-laws picking up the mic at a wedding reception after a few too many. It feels wrong, it sounds awful, and you just hope that after some polite applause that everything will stop. While Celine may have wanted to branch out into a new market, there was absolutely no one asking for this.
