10. Britney Spears - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Originally By: The Rolling Stones http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vF2l_rWdvDs When Britney Spears's sophomore album Oops..! I Did It Again was released in 2000, there was an audible gasp heard around the world when the title (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction emerged among the tracklisting. With her version of the song Britney stripped away the hard edge of The Rolling Stones's original and instead slowed it down and made it into more of a breathy pop song, typical of Britney's earlier work, before the chorus kicks in with an almost R&B beat. A lot of people worried that the Britney version of Satisfaction might fall flat, or that she might not be able to pull it off. It turns out they were right. One of the biggest icons in music taking on one of the most iconic songs of the 20th century should have been a huge deal, but instead this cover is actually pretty forgettable, especially compared with many of the more memorable songs on Britney's album (namely Stronger, which is still one of her finest songs to date). As it goes this would be the first of many covers for Britney, she would later take on Arrows' I Love Rock 'n' Roll and Bobby Brown's My Prerogative, both of which were a lot stronger than her take on Satisfaction, thankfully proving that given the right material a Britney Spears cover version doesn't need to be a bad thing.
My name is Daniel and I live in Newcastle. Nothing makes me happier than excellent pop music, big hair or a C-list celebrity having a Twitter meltdown.
