10 Cover Versions No One Saw Coming

9. Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Jolene

Originally By: Dolly Parton http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuwyDGwfER8 Jolene is undeniably one of the most important song in country legend Dolly Parton's discography. Its lyrics, written by Parton herself (on the same night she also wrote I Will Always Love You, which went on to be re-recorded by Whitney Houston in one of the most praised cover versions of all time), tell a tale of hopelessness and desperation which Dolly Parton's vocals on the track convey perfectly in her delivery on the track. Therefore it was pretty unexpected when such an emotional song was taken on by English pop singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who is famous for her deadpan and nonchalant delivery in her own music, decided to record her own version of Jolene for the soundtrack to the British sitcom Beautiful People. It's hard to go wrong with a song so close to perfection as Jolene, so while the Sophie Ellis-Bextor version, of course, can't quite match the greatness of Dolly Parton's original, we still applaud her efforts.
