10 Covers Versions Of Charles Manson Songs
1. Never Learn Not To Love – The Beach Boys
In 1968, The Beach Boys' drummer Dennis Wilson had a chance meeting with Charles Manson when he happened to pick up two female hitch-hiking members of the "Manson Family" cult. He initially took the ladies to his house and a day later Manson unexpectedly showed up at Wilson's place. They struck up a friendship, and Wilson arranged for a recording session at Brian Wilson's home studio. These recordings remain unreleased and it is extremely unlikely they will ever see the light of day.
Charles Manson specifically wrote "Cease to Exist" with the intent that The Beach Boys would record it. In exchange for publishing rights, Wilson offered Manson some cash and a motorcycle. The band recorded a modified version of the tune as "Never Learn Not to Love". It was originally released in 1968 as a B-Side to "Bluebirds over the Mountain" and it appeared on the band's 1969 album, 20/20. Manson wasn't credited; Dennis Wilson was listed as sole songwriter.
Manson was upset that Wilson took liberties with his song. On one occasion he presented Wilson with a bullet and made the ominous statement: "It's a bullet. Every time you look at it, I want you to think how nice it is your kids are still safe."
As expected, this was the end of Wilson and Manson's friendship. Shortly after, things totally unraveled and the "Manson Family" started to engage in the series of murders. The Beach Boys are unfortunately forever linked to the notoriety of Charles Manson.
