10 Covers You Keep Mistaking For The Original Song

2. Tainted Love - Soft Cell

Original Artist: Gloria Jones

When Marilyn Manson's cover of Tainted Love was released in 2001, there were two types of people who reacted: those who loved it, and those who loved to hate it.

No matter what side of the fence people were on however, everyone was always comparing to the original Soft Cell version from 1982. And how could they not? Soft Cell's Tainted Love is a great and iconic track that helped define the 1980's not only in music, but in pop culture as a whole.

However, the Soft Cell version actually was not the original. In reality, the very first rendition of Tainted Love was released by soul singer Gloria Jones back in 1965. The song was little more than a flop for her, having failed to even make the charts as a single.

It wasn't until the techno-pop infused Soft Cell version came out nearly two decades later that the song became the monster hit known by many today.
