10 Craziest Onstage Incidents In Rock
9. Keith Moon vs. Horse Tranquilizers
Anyone interested in getting into the world of drumming owes it to themselves to take a few cues from Keith Moon. Along with being one of the few genuinely insane presences in the rock world, his amazing sense of power working with the Who is what made songs like Won't Get Fooled Again the unstoppable forces they are today. When it came to the touring life though, things got a little worse for wear when he started to cross his narcotics.
When visiting the Cow Palace in 1973, Moon geared up for the show by taking a handful of horse tranquilizers washed down with brandy. Though his dealer had told him to only take one, the effects of the pills led to Moon's body to give out midway through the show. After numerous chances to get him to come to his senses, Moon was unable to perform for the rest of night.
In what has to be the biggest wish fulfillment moment in rock, Pete Townshend asked the crowd if anyone else could play the drums, leading to Scott Halpin stepping up and performing with his idols, which he said was one of the most exhausting experiences of his entire life. While Moon eventually recovered, sometimes one man's downfall can be another man's shot at glory.
